This Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea in an Hour Walking Tour is a collaboration by Lynn Momboisse and Carmel Cares founder Dale Byrne. To fit this tour into an hour for people that are on a tight schedule we keep things moving along. But, don’t be in too big of a hurry. We have designed the tour to be walked at a reasonably slow pace so you don’t walk through the next stop while we are talking. The one square mile village of Carmel-by-the-Sea has 20 wine rooms, 100 art galleries, 50 restaurants, 50 hotels and countless other businesses. This tour will be covering about 15 square blocks of the downtown area to give you the “lay of the land”. In about 2 miles we will be exploring some of Carmel’s quaint courtyards and passageways and walk by a number of those wine rooms, art galleries, restaurants and hotels. You will also learn about Carmel’s founding fathers, distinctive architecture and storied past. We think that once you have experienced this Downtown Carmel in an Hour Walking Tour, you will be excited to come back and spend more time in our “Village in the Forest”. Of course, if you have more than one hour, you are welcome to check out the places we will be passing. Just pause the tour and restart it when you are ready to continue. And remember, you can always stop the tour and use the Resume feature to continue at the closest point on the map. This tour begins and ends at the Carmel Plaza on Junipero Street and Ocean Avenue. There are three public restrooms located along this walk, one on the third level of Carmel Plaza, one in Devendorf Park and one in Piccadilly Park. There are three ATM's located on this tour, including the NW corner of Carmel Plaza’s second level, the Doud Arcade, and the Wells Fargo bank. If you arrived by bus, your bus will probably be parked on the east side of Carmel Plaza. If you arrived by car, park as close as possible to the Carmel Plaza. Parking downtown has a two-hour parking limit. If you want to avoid this limit, try the residential streets outside downtown. There is also paid public parking under Carmel Plaza. Reach this via Mission Street between 7th Avenue and Ocean Avenue. Happy Adventures!
